In Smiley X No. 4, the familiar icon is stripped of its ease and reintroduced as a site of tension. Rendered in a saturated, almost atmospheric blue, the surface carries visible traces of gesture—dragged, pressed, and inscribed—suggesting both control and resistance.

The expression is deliberately unresolved: one eye marked, the other open; the mouth held in suspension. The symbol no longer communicates a fixed emotion, but instead occupies a space between states—between composure and fracture, visibility and withdrawal.

By reworking a universally recognized form, the piece questions the reliability of outward signals and the simplicity of emotional shorthand. What appears immediate becomes layered, and what seems legible resists clarity.
